Leaving Pensacola, Traveling & Tampa RV Show

January 9th, 2014

As it was due to rain over the next couple of days we went for a drive along the coast through Gulf Breeze, Navarre, Fort Walton Beach, and Destin.  It started out nice as we drove through Gulf Breeze....

but soon the mist and rain started and it made the rest of the coastal drive pretty miserable.  We stopped at Eglin Air Force Base to check it out and drove up to Crestview to collect our mail.  The rain stopped and it cleared up for our drive home.  We drove alongside part of historical state route 1 and the old brick road.

 January 10th - 12th, 2014

The weather wasn't that good for our last few days in Pensacola and so we stayed in and around the house.  Packing it up and getting ready to leave between rain showers.

The Australian Open starts tonight.... :) C'mon Andy, although not expecting too much.  Just happy to see you playing again.  Roll on Monday midnight CST when you play your first match.  Why am I traveling on Tuesday???? Note to self, bad planning!!!!

January 13th

We left Pensacola today for an overnight stop at Tallahassee RV Park.  We arrived at the park about the same time as 5 other rigs and there was only one lane in and out so we had to wait to get to our spot which was in front of the office.  Eventually I got out and asked a couple of people in cars if they would let us through, in my nicest polite voice of course.  They didn't mind at all.  One thing about being an RV'er is that usually everyone is really friendly!!!  We got parked, set up and took CoCo for a walk before the heavens opened up and it poured with rain.  We were fortunate today to miss the rain as we were traveling.
We are now in the Eastern Time Zone, three hours ahead of Las Vegas and five hours behind the UK.  I intended to stay up and watch Andy's match tonight but lasted until about 12:30am, it was 2-2 in the first set and I decided I had better go to bed as we have another travel day tomorrow.  I recorded the match to watch in the morning.

January 14th

I got up and watched the rest of Andy's match which he won.
Today we have a long drive to Thonotassa which is North East of Tampa and we had a couple of problems.  We started off with the fuse controlling the radio and cigarette lighters blown and after searching for it we decided to look for it later.  We use the cigarette lighter socket to charge our GPS which gives us directions but hopefully it will be charged enough, if not we will resort to my phone or paper maps (perish the thought!!!)  It lasted most of the way and we arrived safely.
Unfortunately we didn't beat the rain and had to drive some of the way in it, although it wasn't for too long.  That was fortunate as one of our windscreen wipers stopped working.  Bryan looked at it and determined that the grooves inside the arm were stripped out and we will have to get a new arm.
Luckily it was on the passenger side and so Bryan could still see to drive!!
We arrived at Happy Traveler RV Park in Thonotassa.  We are here for a month.  There are a lot of trees here and we were worried we wouldn't get a satellite signal but they told us we should do and once we were set up we got the signal straight away.   I was relieved as I want to watch Andy Murray in the Australian Open and being here for a month would be difficult for us with no television as we have certain shows that we like to follow.

January 15th

Today was the opening day for the Florida RV Supershow that we wanted to go to.  We knew we wouldn't be able to see everything we wanted to in one day and so decided we would go today and Friday to avoid the weekend crowds.  One advantage of being retired, ha!! ha!!  We got there and managed to get good parking close to the show.  It was huge and we split our time looking around the booths where campgrounds were advertising their sites, and vendors were trying to sell their products, and looking around the numerous rv's that were on display.  We split this up by sitting in on a couple of seminars and having lunch, which gave us some much needed rest.  It was a good day.  I set the recorder to tape Andy's match which was due to start about 4am tomorrow morning and went to bed.

January 16th

Got up at about 5am to watch Andy and found out the channel he was supposed to be on stopped at 4:30 and so it didn't record.  Fortunately, because of the heat the matches had been delayed and he hadn't started yet.  Unfortunately they didn't show all of his match which was a little frustrating.  Still watched what I could and he won which was the main thing.
We had to go to Macdill Air Force Base as it was time for me to refill my prescriptions.  It is about 35 minutes away from the campground although took us a while longer as there were roadworks. They have to transfer them from Davis Monthan which is the last base we were at and will call us when they are ready.  
We also wanted to get a new phone for Bryan as his isn't working that well.  He had selected the one he wanted and we are going to try the Straight Talk plan from Walmart.  There were a couple of stores here that have it in stock.  Unfortunately we went to both and they were both sold out.  We looked at the other phones that were available but there wasn't much there so we eventually called it a day and came home.  It was a little disappointing.  We are going to look at ordering it online. We want to use the Verizon lines and so you have to get a phone that works with those.  Once we get this, we will have one phone on Verizon and one on AT&T so hopefully that will give us a wider range and connection throughout the States.  We also had to swop phone numbers as my plan is eligible for renewal and can be cancelled but his isn't yet.  So, I now have Bryan's number and he has mine!!!
It was another exhausting day and not quite a s productive as yesterday but at least I ordered my prescriptions.

January 17th

Wow, another day at the RV show.  Our feet don't feel as though they have touched the ground this week.  It has certainly been hectic....
We looked around the other half of the RV's that we hadn't seen yet.  There really wasn't anything that really amazed us.  We still like our Georgetown.  There were a couple of fifth wheels that had two separate living/sleeping areas and it would be nice to have a separate area for guests to be able to sleep but we will be sticking with Lily until we decide to stop traveling at least.
The weather was nice and when we got home I took CoCo for a walk and then we sat outside for a short while.
Andy was due to play about 10:30 tonight but didn't start until closer to midnight.  I was going to stay up and watch but was so exhausted that I went to bed and recorded it.

January 18th

Got up and watched Andy's match.  I have to watch the match before I see any news or hear what the result is or it spoils it.  He won again which was good news as he was playing Feliciano Lopez who is a more difficult opponent.  We saw Andy play Lopez in Los Angeles a few years ago and it went to three sets but Andy won.  I also met Andy, got him to sign a shirt and had my picture taken with him.
Needless to say it was a wonderful weekend that I still vividly remember 3 and a half years later.  Here are my pics from the archives of 2010.

Today we stayed at home and rested.  Bryan did laundry and I'm not sure what I did but the day went by quickly.  We barbecued Ribs and had potato salad with them.

January 19th

We had another quiet day to rest our weary bones.  As I say that I was reminded of one of the people who got on the shuttle bus at the RV show for a ride back to the car park on Friday.  Him and his wife had hurried to get on the bus before it left.  He had a stick and his wife got to the bus ahead of him and told us he would be there as quickly as he could.  We could see him trying to hurry.  As he got on the bus he just said "It sucks to get old"  The bus filled with laughter as we could all relate to him.  We were all exhausted from walking all day long and most of us were older.  Bryan and I have often used this exact phrase as we sometimes feel limited in what we can do because of our arthritis and other ailments.  

It is still wonderful though to be retired and able to explore this great country. To the younger people out there, make sure you do anything that you really want to do before you get too old and may not be physically able to.

Brrrr....it's cold but sunny

January 2nd - 8th, 2014 

We really haven't done very much so far this year.  Like the rest of America the weather hasn't been brilliant and has been cold.

Bryan went to visit his mom on the 4th and stayed overnight.  He had a shirt he needed to pick up, so took the opportunity to see mom and we needed to return our parking pass to the campground there. I stayed home with CoCo and we stayed nice and cosy in the motorhome.  The weather wasn't too bad and we went for a walk on the beach. I booked our flights and hotel for San Diego for Ryan's wedding.       in March.

On Monday 6th we took CoCo to the vet.  She has got a growth on her front paw, between her toes, that has got bigger and a blister has developed on her pad that is making her limp a little.  We also needed to get her shots updated.  The vet at the base only does shots and can not do anything surgically  so they gave us a list of vets they recommend. We went to Megan's Landing Veterinary Clinic here in Pensacola.
Dr. Case there was wonderful.  She sat on the floor with CoCo and checked her out.  She gave us some antibiotics and painkiller for her and we will have to go to a vets in Tampa for a follow up for her flu shot and decide if she needs a biopsy on her growth.  She seems to think it could be cancerous but until we get the biopsy we won't know.  They could remove it and that could mean removing a toe as well depending on how much it has grown into the paw.  They did bloodwork which we got the results from the next day and everything was clear except her urine which showed a high white cell count and that she might have a urinary tract infection.  They recommended we get another urine sample in about 3 weeks to see if it has cleared. We are going to see if the antibiotics help the growth go down and then decide what to do.  All the staff there were great and spent some time with us going over everything.  I would recommend them to anyone.

There were hard freeze warnings for Monday and Tuesday nights and it got to 19 Fahrenheit, below freezing, brrr.  We left a tap dripping and the "arctic package" on the motorhome turned on.  This heats the basement under the Lily.  We also had a ceramic heater and our furnace heating the inside. We turned the fireplace off when we went to bed.  We managed to not freeze any of the hoses or pipes which was good as some of the others in the park had icicles hanging from their outside taps.  At least we were not as bad as the northern states.
 
I spent most of Tuesday researching Cell phones as Bryan's is acting erratically and we need to try and get cheaper plans.  We have a family plan with AT&T that we have had for years.  The contract for my phone has expired and Bryan's expires in May.  We will probably transfer my number and get Bryan a new phone using my number.  I'm looking at Straight Talk from Walmart.  Depending on what phone you get you are using AT&T or Verizon towers.  We want to split and have one phone on each service so if we can't get one of them the chances are the other will work and we should get coverage in most places between the two.  This will cut our monthly bill in half, a savings of $90 eventually as long as it works.  It will be good to try one phone first and see what happens.  So sometime soon we will probably swop phone numbers.  Don't worry we will tell you and at least you will still get one of us no matter what number you call.  In the meantime keep calling the numbers you are at the moment.  Mum, until you hear from me differently still call me on my number that you are using.  :)  
I also booked our overnight stay at Tallahassee RV park for next Monday.

Today, Wednesday 8th it was still cold but above freezing.  The Blue Angels, the Navy Flight Demonstration team are stationed here and they were practising yesterday and today.  People were out watching them but we didn't go out as it was still pretty cold and we have seen them before.  We watched a couple of them flying in the distance from the motorhome. We decided to go out to the Navy Museum here on the base as it is inside and would be warm and we needed to get out of the house.  This is Bryan's second visit this trip.

When we got home I took CoCo for a short walk on the beach, as she isn't supposed to be walking far on her paw.  She loved it and was running on the sand.  I had left a stew cooking in the slow cooker and so dinner was ready when I got home and we sat and ate.

Well, that's it for now.  It's a cool night again although not as cold as the last two nights, it is 40 degrees Fahrenheit as I type this at 10:00pm, projected to drop to 32 overnight.

Xmas Day 2013 to New Years Day 2014 in Pensacola, Florida

Xmas Day - December 25, 2013 

We had a completely different Christmas Day planned from normal.  It felt quite strange as it was our first Christmas with just the "two of us" and CoCo of course!!!
We didn't have our usual full cooked breakfast and settled for bacon sandwiches.  Dinner was going to be at 2pm and we wanted to be ready for that.
We had a few pressies to open, thanks to mum and ourselves.  We had already exchanged our christmas gifts with Bryan's mom when we were with her in Louisiana.
We had arranged to skype with family in the UK on Boxing Day as the internet is usually very busy and slow on Xmas Day.  We skyped with Bryan's mom and then got ready for dinner.
Brenda, John, LeeAnne and Aimee seemed to have a busy morning opening presents which looked like fun from the videos and pics that they posted.  Ryan & Christina were both working today although Ryan did call us later in the evening and it was nice to talk to one of our kids actually on Xmas Day. :)
We took our Mexican Corn and Mince Pies to the Christmas Dinner potluck.  There were a lot of people there and a LOT of food.  The hosts had cooked three turkeys and mashed potatoes and everyone else brought a dish.  Someone even brought brussel sprouts and so I was happy.  We sat with two other couples, one was retired air force like Bryan and they had been to a lot of the same bases and he had even been stationed in England at Woodbridge for 7 years, although as he was 72 most of his tours were before Bryan was even in the military.  They still had a lot to talk about though.  The other couple were a 92 year old man and his wife who were from Arkansas and came south in the winter.
After we left we went for a walk on the beach with CoCo to walk off our dinner and ended up walking down to the lighthouse and back. It was a little chilly but nice.

Boxing Day - December 26, 2013

We talked to Ian, Kris, Bailey & Kai on Skype today. The boys showed us what they got for christmas by playing with their toys.  Kai sang Jingle Bells although you couldn't make out the words he was saying it was definitely Jingle Bells from the tone, ha!! ha!!  It was cute.  Bailey helped, he is very good with his little brother.  We spoke to mum on skype as well.  We haven't skyped for a long while and it was good to see her and Ray & Julie.  I cooked Ham for dinner today and tried to decide what to do about my computer.  I was going back and forth between a tablet and a laptop. I could get a good deal on an ipad Air for $499 with wifi and free unlimited cellular until April but it only had 16gb storage.  In the end I decided I needed a new laptop mainly for the storage and memory even though it meant it would cost more. :(

December 27, 2013

We went food and computer shopping.  I still wasn't convinced I was going to buy anything but when we got to the NEX I saw they had an older version Macbook Air laptop for $796, considerably cheaper than the current version and as it was still new and in an unopened box I decided to get it. It is a late 2012 model. Merry Christmas to me!!!!  Thanks Bryan. :)  The rest of the day was spent trying to figure it out!!!  My old Mac(laptop) is about 8 years old and the operating system has changed a little and it took some getting used to.  In fact I'm still getting used to it.

December 28 - 29, 2013

It rained most of the day on the 28th and I took this video so you can see and hear what it sounds like in our home when it rains!!!!
Spent these two days mainly working out my new computer.  It took me most of one day to load all of my pictures on the new computer, only to find out when I went back that none of them were there. :(  I was not a happy camper as you can imagine and have not tried to load the older pictures again since but have got all my other programs loaded, Skype, Office, Adobe etc.  I am especially pleased that I've got the current version of Adobe as I can now watch You Tube videos again.  I put all my bookmarks back on and so my new laptop is getting to be more familiar to me and I am gradually getting used to it.

December 30th 2013

After being indoors for a couple of days we decided to go for a drive.  I looked up some properties that were for sale for less than $50,000 and we went and had a look.  Now, bear in mind that this is cheap and so they were not going to be wonderful but we need somewhere we can park the motorhome and hopefully live in when we want to stay in one place.  Here are links to the best two!!!

New Years Eve - December 31st, 2013

Spent today going over finances and paying a couple of bills as I like to try and get everything paid before the end of the year.  We are staying in tonight as we don't really like crowds and everywhere is always crowded New Years Eve.  Skyped with Chrissie & Ian although their camera wasn't working so we didn't get to see them but it was still good talking.
We stayed up and watched the Pensacola Pelican Drop which was different.  It was followed by fireworks, not quite on the same scale as Las Vegas but not bad for a smaller town and we could hear them where we were at.

New Years Day - January 1st, 2014

Well, the first day of 2014.  I caught up with the blog.  Tried to transfer all my pictures to my new laptop again.  I think it worked this time, yay!!!  Had a cleaning spurt and rearranged the kitchen a little, it is still a work in progress!!  Bryan worked on fixing some things about the house and watched LSU. That's about it for now.  We had a pretty good day, it is now raining but we are tucked up indoors watching TV, Hawaii Life.

Christmas Eve & Newsletter

December 24th, 2013 - We went for a walk on the beach.  It was cold but the sky was blue and clear.  The tide was out further than we have seen before.  CoCo got her nose wet!!!  She really enjoys her walks/runs on the beach as do we.  We are ready for Christmas Day.  I baked mince pies yesterday and Bryan will do the mexican corn in the morning for our pot luck.  I am typing this on Bryans computer as mine has decided it wants nothing more to do with the internet and I think I will have to buy a new one.  It has lasted 8 years and so I really can't complain. 
Well, I am going to get ready for bed so that I can be asleep before Santa deliver my presents.

Hi everyone, well here we are again, another year has flown past. We saw the New Year in with Ryan in San Diego and then headed back to Las Vegas. The first 5 months were normal and uneventful as we waited for me to retire on June 5^th.  I was offered tickets for Wimbledon in the lottery in February and we decided that as it was my 60^th birthday I would go, as I may not be able to get tickets again.  So on June 19^th I flew to London for 5 weeks.  I celebrated my birthday on 25^th with mum, Ray & Julie and went to Wimbledon with Julie on the 27^th.  We stayed 2 nights in a hotel near the courts and had a great time. Although we didn’t see Andy Murray, as he wasn’t playing that day, it was still fantastic being a part of the atmosphere.  On July 6^th Ian collected mum & I and took us to his new home near Cardiff where we stayed for 3 weeks. It was Kai’s first birthday while I was there and we went to “ThomasLand” and rode on Thomas the Tank Engine. J I helped Ian get his grass started and we watered it every night as the UK was having a heat wave while I was there.  It gradually went from brown to green. Needless to say on the 7^th I made sure I was watching on TV as Andy Murray won Wimbledon.  I tried to get tickets but it was not meant to be. 

We decided to leave Las Vegas on August 13^th and start our adventures around America in the motorhome.  We started by going to see Ryan in San Diego as we didn’t know when we would be back on the West Coast. We met his girlfriend Christina and went to Del Mar Races while we were there.  We started to travel East back across California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas (where we visited our daughter Brenda, John, LeeAnn & Aimee, brother Patrick, Karen & Taylor and friends Johnny & Kathy) Louisiana (where we visited Mom), Mississippi, Alabama and ending in Florida as planned on December 2^nd. We established residency in Florida and are staying within 3 minutes of the beach in Pensacola. Ryan got engaged at the beginning of December and is getting married in March 2014 so we will fly back to San Diego for that. 

Our granddaughter LeeAnne got Gold in the Special Olympics Bowling while we were there.  We also watched Aimee in her soccer team and they both took part modeling in a fashion show. Ryan & Ian both got promoted during the year and Ian finished his first 10k charity run.  So proud of all our kids and grandkids.

Our new mailing address is 5715 Highway 85N, #1754, Crestview, FL. 32536.  This is a post office box and as you have probably guessed we are not sending Christmas cards any longer and ask that you do the same as we have to pay for everything to be forwarded to us from the PO box to where we are.  We would love to get comments on the blog or e-mails from you though, letting us know how you are doing.  Hoping to hear from you, have a happy, healthy & prosperous new year.

Visiting Present & Future Home maybe, Sightseeing, Beach and Xmas Preparations

Sunday December 15th - We stayed around the house.  It was Sportsman of the Year in the UK and Andy Murray was one of 10 nominated.  The public votes for the winner in a short time period while the show is airing.  If you are not in the UK you can't vote.  What's wrong with that picture.  I'm sure most of the competitors have fans overseas and I don't see why they shouldn't be able to vote. Fortunately, I had numerous people who said they would vote for me and so Andy was probably better off that I couldn't vote, ha!! ha!!  Guess what, HE WON!!!  Yay!!!  Fabulous end to a good year from him and makes up a little for him having to miss the last three months of the year due to back surgery.  looking forward to seeing you in action again at the end of the month Andy.

Monday December 16th - We got up early (at least early for us) today and headed out 60 miles to Crestview to collect our mail.  Our title for the motorhome was there and hopefully our Daytona tickets as well.  We wanted to do some touristy sightseeing as well.
We went to Milton first and tried to find the hospital where Bryan was born.  We found out that it had moved to a new location & a newer building.  As much as we tried to find the old building we were unsuccessful but drove around for a while.
This was a building in the old district in town complete with Christmas decoration on the lamppost.

We then drove to Crestview and got the mail.  Our Nascar tickets and the title for the motorhome were there, yay!!!  Here is a picture of our official place of residence (home) where we collected the mail. 

The Air Force has a retirement village in this area that is primarily for widows of Air Force servicemen but is also available to other military widows and couples.  I wanted to have a look at it as you never know what might happen in the future.  The Air Force Enlisted Village has both independent living and assisted living accommodation.  The independent living has one and two bedroom apartments.  The two bedroom apartments are $860 a month plus electric and phone.  They are in the process of constructing new buildings which should be completed in 2015 and the rents for those are anticipated to be in the $1,200 - $1,600 range.  They are not cheap but if you are an Air Force widow or couple you can get subsidized if you are on a limited income and have no assets.  It is somewhat comforting that if something happened to Bryan I could live here or if we run out of money (you never know what will happen down the road) we could both live here.  We like this general area and so it could work.  They have a lot of activities if you want to join in and transportation to take you anywhere you need to go.  We met with the Director and she gave us a lot of information.  Bryan is too young to stay there at the moment, you have to be 55 but we don't plan on needing their services for hopefully a few years yet, if at all.  We also asked about Bryan's mom as she is a Navy widow but unfortunately the Navy doesn't subsidize their widows and so she would have to pay the full amount which makes it a little expensive for her.

The Air Force Armament Museum was about 5 minutes from the retirement village and so we went and looked around. It was a good museum and free to get in.

It was getting late and we were still a long way from home and so we started on the ride home.  We had decided to take the coastal road home as we wanted to take in the scenic view.  Unfortunately we got stuck in traffic and the sun was setting as we got there.

We didn't see as much as we would have liked but the sunset was beautiful.

December 17th, 2013 - We got the military police to come out to the motorhome today and fill in the paperwork to check the VIN# that is needed for the registration. 

December 18th, 2013 - Today we went and looked at the other military campground that is close by.  Blue Angel Naval Recreation Area is on Perdido Bay.  There are two campgrounds there.  The first one had a lot of trees and was older.  We decided we probably wouldn't get a satellite signal there for TV but the bay was nice.

Apparently I didn't get any pictures of the second campground but it was a newer area and there were some sites that we would have been able to get a signal.  This campground is a little further away from shops and the town and it $60 month cheaper than where we are now but there doesn't seem to be as much sand and beach as where we are.  There are more activities here, crazy golf etc. but I think I prefer where we are.  It's a good backup though if our park is ever full.

We got home and went for our walk on the beach.  The sea was a little rougher today and was washing up some interesting things on the beach which of course CoCo had to investigate. 

Bryan managed to stop CoCo getting bitten on the nose by this crab as CoCo wanted to be friends!!

 Later after we got back from the beach this little fella decided to come and visit.  They must be getting used to us as there are three of them that always play around by the motorhome in the trees but this is the closest they have been.

December 19th, 2013 - We went to register the motorhome and car today and get Florida license plates.  The car was fine but when we came to do the motorhome they didn't like that the odometer reading wasn't clear and so we had to get another form completed, which meant the security police at the base would have to complete another form!!!  We took a new form to them and they kindly completed it again and back we went to the registration office.  We hadn't been waiting there long when the lady that had seen us the first time spotted us and called us to her desk, which was nice of her as it meant we jumped the line and saved some time.  This time we managed to get the motorhome registered, third times a charm!!!  So we now have Florida number plates as well as Driver licenses.  We truly belong.

December 20th - 23rd, 2013 - We have been finalizing christmas stuff and have decided we are joining in with the pot luck at the campground on Christmas Day.  The camp hosts are providing Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy and everyone else will bring the sides and desserts.  We are taking mince pies, sweetcorn and christmas crackers.  It is strange that we haven't brought a lot of food like we  usually do but fits in with our new lifestyle.  I'm sure we will have a good time.  I'm really a pretty private person and take a while to feel comfortable around people but this is something I have to overcome in this life where everyone is usually very friendly.  

Ryan & Christina have decided they will get married in San Diego on March 7th and so we will fly back there for that.  We will probably fly out from Orlando as the cheapest fares are from there. We have extended our stay here until January 13th when we will head down to Tampa for a month before heading over to Daytona for the 500.
