Rustic Sands RV Resort, Mexico Beach,Florida, Lighthouses & WII Museum

April 18th -22nd, 2017

We left Panacea RV Park and headed west along the coast to Rustic Sands Resort Campground at Mexico Beach.  We will be here for 5 nights.

Here are some pictures of the campground. The first site they gave us we couldn't get a satellite signal so we moved to another site.

They have music playing most nights but it didn't disturb us.  Certainly a lot of activities to join in if you wanted to and a very friendly place.

We have a few lighthouses to see while we are here.  The first one today was Cape St. George Lighthouse at Eastpoint, Florida.  This has been reconstructed, on St. Georges Island, after the first one toppled into the ocean after several hurricanes and storms weakened it.

Looking down as we climbed the stairs.

This lighthouse had been renovated very well and the staff there were very informative.

The next lighthouse on our list was the Crooked River Lighthouse at Carrabelle, Florida.

Here is a VIDEO that I took from the top of the lighthouse.  I went live on Facebook for this.  Something I've only recently discovered how to do!!!!

After climbing the two lighthouses we decided we deserved some lunch.  We chose the Apalachicola Seafood Grill in nearby Apalachicola.  I had crab cakes and a salad and Bryan had Fried Shrimp.  It was delicious and I couldn't eat all of mine.  Nothing better than seafood when you're on the coast!!!

After lunch we went to look at this place a few doors away.

It was like a grotto with all sorts of metal signs, plants and knick knacks. I spent a long while looking at all the stuff there and could have spent a fortune. Ended up buying a couple small things for my fairy garden.

Would have loved this sign but it was $70 and we decided we didn't need it that badly.

The sidewalks had potted plants and different decorations on them.  It really gave the town a quaint feel.
We loved what we saw of Apalachicola and could probably live here or on this coast.  It still seems to be in olden days here.

On the way home we stopped at this Piggly Wiggly Grocery store.  We don't see these very often.

We had another awesome day out and about.

We had another two lighthouses to visit today, although one of them is now a private house.

The first one was Cape St. Blas Lighthouse at Port St. Joe.

There was a big lily pond here with the ocean in the background.

The next lighthouse was St. Josephs Point.  This has now been transformed into a beautiful private home and was just along the road from Cape St. Blas.

It was still relatively early and so we decided to visit a small WWII museum we had seen on our trip a couple of days ago.  Camp Gordon Johnston WWII Museum looked a little the worse from wear on the outside but we decided to go in and see what it was like.  After the initial entrance it opened up into a very informative museum with lots of details.  It reminded me of a small museum that we visited on Vancouver Island, both were jam packed full of information and it took quite a while to go through them.  I have just selected a couple of pictures out of the many we took.

The picture below is of an Iraqi Army Oil Lantern that was taken from an Iraqi Bunker during Desert Storm, March 1991 by Major David K Butler, Task Force 2nd/7th Infantry 24th Inf. Division, XVIII Airborne Corps.  Not WWII, but of interest to us as Bryan was a part of Desert Storm.

Here I am reading all the information.  It takes us hours to go through these museums.

We learnt that Caravelle Beach was used to train troops for the Normandy D-Day Invasion.

Various Artifacts
It was a very interesting visit and we are glad we went in after our initial hesitation because of the condition from the outside.

On the way home I took a VIDEO of our drive, across a five mile bridge and through Apalachicola, Florida.

We had a few fun days here and will certainly not forget "The Forgotten Coast".
