Family, Memories & Workcamping in San Diego

Wednesday September 16th, 2015

We are sitting waiting for our clearance to start work at the park.  I made a lasagne to take over to Ryan & Christina for dinner.  As it was their first full day at home with Trystan I didn't want them to have to worry about dinner.  We stayed for a little while, had dinner, cleaned up and then left them to try and get into a routine with a new baby.

Thursday September 17th, 2015

We had orientation at the park this morning and will start our jobs as volunteer camp hosts tomorrow.  Here are today's baby pictures. Looks like he is trying out all modes of sleeping accommodation!!!

Friday September 18th, 2015

Bryan got up early to tag along with another volunteer while he was cleaning his bathrooms and then got to do ours on his own.  We got a list of campers who were arriving today. As it was Friday there were a lot of arrivals and we went through the campground getting the sites ready for the arrivals.  We are trying to figure out the best routine for this and it will get better once we have that down but did quite well for our first day.  We work five days on and two off and should average between 4 & 5 hours a day on our work days.  We, mostly Bryan, did 7.5 hours today and it felt good.  By the end of the day our loop was full, we have 54 sites.  We will sleep well tonight.

Ryan & Christina came to visit with Trystan, it was good to see them and get cuddles!!!

Saturday September 19th, 2015

Bryan is getting up at 4.30am and starting our bathrooms about 5.30am as he wants to get them done early before campers want to use them, and we are asked not to have more than one bathroom block closed at any time. He then does the dog run, checking for poop that hasn't been cleared up, ensuring there are doggie bags available and emptying the trash cans.  He checks the playground area as well.  We have to go to the office every day about 9am to get our list of arrivals and departures and then check/clean the sites after the departures and before the arrivals.  Departures should have left by noon, so we check that the sites that should be empty are, and clean them.  Pick up trash/dog poop, rake & sweep sites, turn power pedestals off, clean tables and covers.  The leaves are our worst enemy as no sooner have you swept the wind comes and delivers some more.  We are told not to worry about this and do the best we can, and that our loop is the busiest as has the most trees and arrivals and departures.       We did 9.5 hours today but are getting the campground caught up and so it should get quicker.  Some of the tables and overhead covers were very bad and took some cleaning and there were a lot of leaves that looked like they hadn't been cleared for a while and we are still getting into our system.  It is good to be doing something and getting some exercise at the same time.

Christina had an early birthday dinner celebration at Joe's Crab Shack.  She hasn't been able to eat Crab Legs while pregnant and she wanted to make up for that, which she did.  Unfortunately, the service was terrible but we made the most of it and celebrated with her and friends.

Sunday September 20th, 2015

This is the last day of the working week for us, so our Friday, as we have Monday & Tuesday off.  Bryan doesn't have to do bathrooms on Sundays as we have a lot of sites that empty out and we need to  clean, so he got to stay in bed a little later today.

After we had finished our site cleaning for today we went shopping to see if we could find a laptop for Bryan.  His screen got broken on Friday somehow and so he can't use it.  We debated getting it repaired or replacing it and decided to see what we could find.  After looking in Sams Club and going to the Nex on base we found a HP with a touchscreen for a very reasonable price and so bought it.  We celebrated with lunch, Bryan had Five Boys and I had Panda Express.

The rest of the day Bryan worked on updating his new laptop.

Trystan is one week old today.  Christina posted this picture of him.  Look at the cute expression. He's thinking, "Hmmmm, what can I get up to next?????"

Monday September 21st, 2015

Stayed in today.  Bryan carried on updating his new laptop.  One of the sites I am on posted these pictures from 1910 of Wormley, Herts.  My father was born in Wormley in 1926. The family were landlords of The Old Star Inn shown in the picture and my grandfather was born there in 1899.  I wonder if any of the people in the picture were ancestors of mine???

I really must do more of my family history now that I'm retired but never seem to have enough time in the day for everything I do.  What is wrong with that picture???  My problem is Facebook and blogs that I follow and the internet!!!!  I get sidetracked from one thing to another.  For instance, here I am writing my blog and I just went off researching family history online and spent a good hour doing that, hmmmmm.  I'm just out of control when it comes to my laptop and internet connection, always researching something or another!!!  Oh well, I am retired after all, although I REALLY REALLY want to do more family history.

HaPpY HaPpY Birthday to our daughter-in-law and new mummy Christina.  Here's a picture of Trystan trying to sing Happy Birthday to mommy.  Mommy not looking too impressed. He will get better, promise. Ha!! Ha!!  Seriously, 9 days old and look at that head control.

Now, he's frowning.  Mommy you look older today, what happened???  Oh yes, that's right, it's your birthday.

Bryan cooked ribs and Ryan, Christina and Trystan came for dinner.  It was yummy and we had fun hanging out and I sang Happy Birthday.  No one was impressed with that either!!!!

Wow, we had forgotten how quickly "weekends" go, back to "work" tomorrow!!

Four years ago we were in Chicago when Ryan graduated from Navy Bootcamp.  It was a fantastic day and we were so, so proud.

Ryan is in all these pictures, you just have to find him. They put them in order of height and he was one of the tallest in his division.

Peeking out in this row ^near the back

Three rows from right side of marching sailors, two from back but can't really tell it's him

Again, third row in from right side, second from back
Anyway, back to the present day and we were back at work after our weekend.  It was very, very hot.   Trust us to start here and there be a heatwave.  Getting a good workout though.

It's my mums birthday.  Her second in heaven.  I love and miss you Mum. Here's a picture taken at a surprise birthday party we had for her 80th in 2009.

Trystan went on his first trip to San Diego zoo.  Looks as though he slept through most of it.

Both boys are winking!!!! Like father, like son

More memories, mums funeral was one year ago today.

Another picture of Trystan.

It was a busy day at the campground as we had a lot of arrivals again for the weekend.  Keeps us on our toes. :)

It's our 24th wedding anniversary. We've had ups and downs over the years, good times and bad times but have survived them all.  Here's to many, many more years of adventures ahead.

Dalhousie Castle

Here's a couple of fun wedding pictures.
Sue trapped in the tower!!

It was a lovely fun day and one we will always remember. We celebrated today by going to Red Lobster for dinner.

Sunday September 27th, 2015

Bryan posted that it was "The end of week one work camping.  Lot harder than we thought but nothing we can't handle.  I think the heat of southern California, San Diego, is the hardest part.  We spend most of the day raking leaves and cleaning spots for new occupants, but it is worth it.  Space rent is free, electricity is free and you meet a lot of nice people.  Si, if you are in the San Diego area visit Santee Lakes and stop by and say hello.  Here are some pictures of our space"

It is a nice campground and we have a lovely spot here to call home for a couple of months.

Here's a picture of Trystan, celebrating being two weeks old, on daddy's lap.

Monday September 28th - Wednesday September 30th, 2015

We finished the month out with our weekend, not really doing much and back to work on the 30th.

The month of September will always be a very emotional month for us, with many ups and downs.

This year was particularly hard, remembering this time last year, but new happy memories have been made.  Timing is everything and the fact that we have a new addition to the family born in the month a year after losing mum is something to cherish. It's a shame that he couldn't have been born on the 10th which was Bryan's dads birthday but at least he will carry on his name.

A couple of Trystan pictures to finish off the month.

Take care everyone and be sure to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you.

To all of our family, we are thinking of you, send you hugs and kisses and look forward to when we can see you again. xxxx
