Summer of 19 - #19 - Repairs & Fishing at Grumpy Bear, Mingo Falls & Mingus Mill near Cherokee

Tuesday September 10th, 2019
We stayed home today.  We have been having a few problems with our television receiving programs, from our satellite dish.  It has been intermittent, sometimes we can get channels and sometimes we can't.  Sometimes we can get some channels and not others, and sometimes we can get everything we should!!   This has been on and off since we returned from the UK. Bryan had done a couple of things that appeared to work, only for it to "break" again a few days or weeks later.  Since we have been here it hasn't worked.
Fortunately Bryan had already ordered a part that he thought was the problem, and it arrived today.  He worked on replacing the SWIM unit, and we crossed our fingers.  Yay, it worked, Let's hope it lasts.
Unfortunately a short while after, the local channels we were receiving from our separate antenna on the roof decided not to work.  We had just replaced this antenna a few days ago, as it had a broken wire, and it was working fine.  To say we were frustrated would be an understatement.  Bryan worked on it most of the afternoon, and at one time we couldn't get antenna or satellite channels, so no tv at all.  In the end he disconnected a cable and suddenly the tv had channels.  We weren't really sure why, as this cable hadn't been touched but it appears it doesn't need it any more.
With that issue hopefully fixed Bryan decided he should go fishing.  He bought a fishing license and headed over to the river.  I took the next picture from inside Lily(motorhome).

As I was taking my pictures I noticed two officers talking to a couple at the end of the campground in the tent section.  They didn't have a tent, just a car.  They ended up driving away, and a few minutes later the officers also left.  Bryan was quite close to where it was happening and said he thinks they had just parked in the campground and someone had called the police.  There are signs saying campers only and trespassers will be prosecuted, so maybe that was it.

I walked over to where Bryan was fishing to see how he was doing.  He hadn't caught anything but I think he was enjoying the peace and quiet and scenery.

There was a Blue Heron sitting on a rock further up the river.

Here's a close up.

Looking up river the other way.  It is so beautiful here.

Bryan decided to move up nearer the bridge, and waded out to some rocks in the river.

I sat and watched him for a while and then left him in peace.  He returned not long after, he didn't catch anything but had a nice relaxing time.

We went into Cherokee to visit Mingo Falls, which is on the Cherokee Indian Reservation.

There was a steep staircase going up to the trail but I had read that this was the worst part of the short hike to the waterfall.  Bryan counted 162 steps.

The hardest part for me was the first section of steps which were quite deep.  It was impossible to just walk up them.  You had to take an extra step between each one and the treads were steep.  I found myself leading with the same leg on each step instead of alternating legs going up the steps.  Consequently my knee started to ache.  I had to make a conscious effort to lead with opposite legs on each step. Fortunately about half way up, the steps changed into regular depth and height and it became easier.

There was a bench at the top of the stairs, we both sat for a short while before continuing.  We always take our time with these walks,  sit and enjoy the scenery while resting at the same time.

It wasn't long before we reached the falls.  They were hidden behind the trees on the left, and once we stepped up to the wooden bridge they were right there.

They were very tall and quite majestic.  It was difficult to fit them into one picture, so I took a VIDEO.  You can see the waterfalls and hear them. 😃

We spent a while here taking pictures before starting our walk back.

Here we are back at the top of the steps getting ready to go down.

It was much easier going down then coming up, at least for me.

Our next stop was Mingus Mill.

There was a short trail from the car park to the mill.

The mill is a water powered mill that grinds corn.. There is no wheel here though, and a water powered turbine is used to power the machinery.

It was a very photogenic site.

Downstairs in the mill

I went upstairs and took some pictures.

There's Bryan waiting for me.

I guess he gave up waiting for me, and went to take some pictures.
Water Chute
Penstock

Water flows through the chute, down the penstock and into the turbine.

I took this picture from upstairs in the mill
and this one of Bryan taking a picture of me
There I am, taking his picture. 😀

The chute had some leaks!!

Wild flowers although not as impressive as being there

Water coming to the chute
Water going down the chute

Wild Flowers
It was another beautiful place.  The pictures don't do it justice, but there were many wild flowers that just enhanced the beauty.
Another wonderful day here in the Great Smoky Mountains.
