Part 2/2 - Amelia Island, Old Houses & Lighthouse

Wednesday April 23rd, 2014

To continue on with our day out.........

We continued to drive north. We went past an Ian Road and then about 5 minutes later a Bailey Road, what are the chances of that!!!  Eventually we reached Amelia Island and drove through Amelia Island Plantation Resort which is a mixture of owned homes and vacation rentals.  It was nice but appeared upper class which was a little off putting to us mere commoners!!!  We then came to the shopping area, we were wondering where everyone got their shopping as we hadn't seen any stores since we got off the ferry.  We saw an Applebees (we are obviously back in our class now) and stopped for lunch.

After lunch we continued our drive on Amelia Island toward the Museum of History at Fernandina Beach.  We found the museum in a back street that was part of the historical district.
This model of a fishing trawler had a familiar name.
I tried following the directions for steering the ship in this interactive children exhibit but I wasn't very successful.
This was an interactive children's section modeled like a ship

Bryan got a picture of me trying to follow directions to steer the ship.  I wasn't very successful even though you can see how hard I was concentrating, ha!! ha!!

A very old soda machine

Bryan got his and my reflection in this picture
We left the museum and decided to look for the lighthouse that was here.  We eventually found it, although it was closed.

On the way to finding the lighthouse we drove around the historical district taking pictures of the old houses. This first one is Fairbanks House which is now a bed and breakfast, which specializes in different package deals and looks very nice.

There were so many wonderful old houses that we couldn't take pictures of them all.

As we were driving around we saw this truck full of logs, we saw quite a few of these driving on the island.

W started our drive home and decided not to take the ferry back.  On the way we had to cross this bridge.
This was as we were coming down on the other side.

That concludes part 2 of our day out.  It was a very interesting and enjoyable day.  I also got my first bug bites of the year but only three which wasn't bad as I didn't use any bug spray.  I will have to start using the spray and my other bug deterrents from now on if we go to wooded areas.
