Summer of 18-#46-Presque Isle Lighthouses, Underground Railroad

Friday August 24th, 2018 - 2 of 2

The first part of the day and our visit to Forty Mile Point Lighthouse is HERE.

We saw this old school house as we left 40 Mile Point lighthouse park.

We headed to Old Presque Isle where there are four lights.  The first one was Old Presque Isle Lighthouse.

This statue is Patrick Garrity Sr., who was the last keeper of the Old Light and transferred to the New Light.  It also displays a plaque that pays tribute to all Persia Isle Lighthouse Keepers

I wonder who that is in the red?

Here's the answer.
I had never heard of the underground railroad and so I looked it up.  An interesting part of American History.  For those of you who would like to know more, you can find out HERE.
It appears that the above statement about Jocko Statues may not be accurate, but as far as I can tell it hasn't been proven either way. Here's a LINK  to "Snopes" arguments on the matter.
Apparently the underground railroad did operate in this area though.

There were some trails where you could walk through the trees.

Lake Huron
We decided not to climb the lighthouse. We both need to conserve our bodies and energy. We had already climbed 40 Mile Point earlier today, so decided that was enough.  This was only a short one so I'm sure we could have done it, but we still wanted to see other lights.

This bell was huge and you could strike it.  It rung loud and for a long while.  I don't think I've ever heard a bell like it.

This building, that is on the National Register of Historic Places, has been made into the museum and gift shop.

The inside was cute.  It had been a private residence for a time. In 1995 it was sold to Presque Isle Township, who now operate it as a museum and gift shop.
I went upstairs

We got our passport stamp and made our way to New Presque Isle Light Station

We parked and went into the lighthouse. The lady there told us the museum in the other building was closing in about 30 minutes so she suggested we went there first as she was open for another two hours.

We walked over to the museum.  It was a bit crowded as it seemed as if everyone had heard it was closing, and converged on the place.  We managed to work a way around so that we could at least get in the rooms, in between the crowds!!!  I think we did pretty well as you can't see any other people in the pictures!!!!

Missie Kay, I thought of you.

Once we had looked around we escaped the crowds, and sat on two rocking chairs on the front porch. We saw this yacht in the distance.

After a short rest we went back to the lighthouse.

We decided again not to climb the lighthouse, but we got the stamp for our passport.

We got a picture looking up the stairs though.

I got this picture of a range light as we left the lighthouse.

On our way home we stopped to look at the Range Lights.

At the back of the car park, but on private property, is the Presque Isle Rear Range Light.

Across the road is the Presque Isle Front Range Light

There is a small park here but we didn't go and explore.

We drove along some back roads on our way home, and as we turned onto this road there was a deer standing in the middle of it.  We stopped but before I could get a picture he had run into the trees along the side.  It was awesome to see though.

We eventually got home after a long day out and we still haven't done the shipwreck cruise.
