UK Trip 2019 - #6 - Gower Coast, Wales - Mumbles & Burry Port

Thursday July 25th, 2019
Bryan & I had a relaxing day at Ian's.  We got some food shopping for our stay here and looked at where we were going to visit while we are here.

Friday July 26th, 2019
Our first day trip was to Swansea & the Gower Coast.  Click HERE to see a map of the route we took.

Our first stop was Swansea because we needed to visit our bank to get Bryan a new debit card.  We discovered they couldn't issue him one as they were in the process of closing accounts that had overseas addresses. 😕 I still had mine so we will just use that until the time comes when they decide to close the account. Then we will need to figure out what to do.

While walking to the bank we saw this street.  Christina, we thought of you.

After a disappointing start to the day at the bank, the day started to get better as we headed to the Gower Coast, first stop Mumbles.

Although you can't see it in this picture we could see the lighthouse in the distance.  It was a lovely drive.

We drove through the small but busy town on our way to, yes you guessed it, the lighthouse!!!

Mumbles Pier appears to be more famous than the lighthouse though.

Blackberries ready for picking but I left them for someone else.
Lovely clock.  This is a popular design.

We walked down the steps to the pier. See me in the pink!!!
Sue heading toward the pier.
Aaah, there's the lighthouse in the distance.

Ok, let's go for a walk along the pier.

This is the old lifeboat station that has been replaced with a new one at the end of the pier.  It is Victorian, built in 1898 with a lifeboat slipway, boathouse and fishing platform.

The pigeons/seagulls have taken residence. What an amazing residence for them. 😀

Bryan lagging behind.  We often separate when we're looking at things as we take our separate pictures, and different things appeal to each of us but we are always in sight of each other.

Here's the new lifeboat station.

See the pink dragon........

Here he is, he needs a name......Maybe "Pinky Puff" after Puff the magic dragon.  After all he lived by the sea didn't he!!!!!

I walked down to the small beach to get some pictures while Bryan got his from above.

Mumbles Lighthouse in the distance.  You need a boat to get closer but I don't believe you can go in it.

This dog was having fun playing fetch.

It was a lovely small beach and not too crowded but we had lots more to see.

The joys of country living, we were forced to slow down for quite a while behind a tractor. It didn't matter as it gave us a chance to enjoy the countryside and the Gower Coast.

Our next stop was Burry Port, where we were hoping to see two lighthouses.

Burry Port Harbour was built in the 1830's and became the main coal exporting port for the valleys. However, the dock now houses the only marina in Carmarthenshire, and the harbour was dredged especially for this purpose.

There's the lighthouse peeking out at us.

Burry Port Lighthouse is not the largest lighthouse we've seen, in fact it might be the smallest but it was cute and did what it was built to do.
The sign commemorating the restoration of the lighthouse could do with some restoring. 😞

The beach was amazing.

Tide was out

That blur in the background is Whiteford Lighthouse which can be walked to at low tide from the other side of the bay.

Back to Burry Port Lighthouse

It was low tide and obviously no boats were going in or out of the harbor.  Some locals were taking advantage of a tide pool by the harbour gates for swimming.

Burry Port Lifeboat Station.  A very similar design to the new one at Mumbles.

We loved Burry Port and spent a lot of time at the harbour and beach.  It was so pretty and tranquil and almost like being in a different world.

We started to head back to Ian's.  These flowers bordered the road as we were leaving.  It had been a lovely day. We saw three lighthouses although we couldn't go in any of them it still made us happy.

What an awesome day, lets see what's in store tomorrow.
