UK Trip 2019 - #8 - Wales - Aberdulais Tinworks & Waterfall

Monday July 29th, 2019 - 1 of 2
Today was our last full day in Wales and we intended to make the most of it.
Map of today's travels

Aberdulais Tinworks & Waterfall was first on our list of places to see.

A sign in the center tells about Aberdulais. Here's what it says:
"Why Aberdulais? - Aberdulais is a village founded on water.  The powerful falls have driven industry for centuries.  Earlier times saw copper, flour, and wool produced here, while today the river generates electricity.  Our tinplate works rose about 1825, at the meeting of the rivers Dulais and Neath.  Here there was ready access to local iron, charcoal, and coal. Vitally too, there were waterways connecting to world markets.  Sadly the transport links which created the village now divide it.  But the flyover did not erase Wales' finest surviving example of a water-powered tinplate works."

I'll let the pictures tell the story of this really interesting and historical place.

Chimney Stack

This waterwheel still generates electricity for the site.

The waterfalls were beautiful.

Working in the tinworks - "It was so hot the sweat ran out of our shoes"

This was the elevator which came up from the floor below.  When it went down the ground was flat and you didn't even know it was there.  It gave us quite a shock when we saw the "ground" rising!!!!

Sue, having a rest and listening to the river
Well, that was a successful start to the day.  Next stop Neath Canal............
