Botanical Building

February 9th, 2016 - Botanical Building, Balboa Park

This visit is just a small part of our second visit to Balboa Park.  For a general overview of Balboa and a link to a map, please read the main blog that is available HERE.

The Botanical Building is the only known conservatory in the world built with no glass, only wood lath and is also one of the largest lathe structures in the world. It was built for the 1915-1916 exposition.

Wood Lathe Entrance

Beautiful Orchids

Pitcher Plant that eats insects.  I watched an ant crawling into it!!!

More Orchids

I loved this one.  Each flower looked like a lady in a purple dress, with an exotic headdress!!!! Well ok, I know she doesn't have legs!!!

The wood lath surrounding the plants.  It is an amazing structure.

Blood Lily

Amazing woodwork!!!

Looking through the wood lath to the outside
The view from inside the Botanical Building at the Lily Pond and beyond.

To complete this as we looked through the lathe structure toward the lily pond there was a guitarist playing.  It was wonderful to just admire this beauty and listen to the soft music.

Another small lovely building to walk around and beautiful flowers to see and there is no entrance fee.
