February 5th, 2016 - San Diego Railroad Museum, Balboa Park.
This visit is just a small part of our day at Balboa Park. For a general overview of Balboa and a link to a map, please read the main blog that is available
HERE.
The railroad museum was the second museum we went in. We had tried to go in it first but it didn't open until 11am so we had to return when it opened.
It was amazing and we both loved it. I have never seen so many miniature railway layouts in one place. Every boys' and mans' dream come true. The men running it can bring their own trains while they are there to run on the track.
It is managed by various clubs:
San Diego Model Railroad Association
La Mesa Model Railroad Club
San Diego Society of "N" Scale
San Diego 3 Railers Club - Also has a kids club.
The above links provide more history and information about the various layouts in the museum and how you can join.
Imagine making all the buildings and the layout. There is so much detail here. They have created their own little world. Everyone could find something they could create or help with here.
The models are mostly behind glass which is on hinges so the track can be easily accessed and the track is everywhere. There were people cleaning the windows, a never ending job, while we were there.
Trains were running continuously.
Sue fascinated by the trains, buildings and landscape. I was trying to follow the trains around the track as they went through tunnels, over bridges and around.
