Yuma Quartermaster Depot & Visitor Center

February 24th, 2016

We took a road trip to Yuma, Arizona to go to the Yuma Quartermaster Depot State Historical Park, which is part of the Historic Waterfront District.

They served tea and pastries here but we didn't buy any as we were going to have lunch later.

Deep sea divers were used to do work on the Colorado River when the pipes were being put in to divert the river to other parts of the West. (Thanks to Bryan for this information as I didn't know what they did, Ha!!Ha!!)

There was a tractor and farming show being held at the weekend and they were getting ready for it.  I was surprised but there is a lot of farmland around the base.

The Commanding Officer's Quarters and Kitchen is the oldest home in Yuma.  It was constructed in 1859.
The house has been restored to its 1876 appearance.

There are some interesting older items displayed in the house.

My grandmother showed me how to sew on one of these.

This was a child's room with a doll & dolls pram.

The bathtub.  I could do with this in the motorhome although we both laughed at the prospect of trying to get in and then out of it!!!!

The Colorado River behind the house. I found it hard to envision a steamboat coming along here but I guess it has shrunk as the water has been diverted to other parts.

The water reservoir which supplied the Depot with water from the Colorado River using a gravity fed system of underground pipes.  A pump was used to get the water from the river to the reservoir tank.

The Quartermaster office had an original desk and some old uniforms and papers.

Old wagons and train carriage

There were some interesting exhibits in an old storehouse.

Here's the steamboats going along the river.  I guess they didn't need as much room as I thought.

and some pretty flowers in the grounds.

This was a very small place but well worth a visit.  Would have been worth the $4 admission each but was even better as Bryan got in free and it cost me $2.

We went to Yuma Landing Bar & Grill for lunch, which was good, before heading to the Territorial Prison.
