Point Cabrillo Light Station, Mendocino, Ca

May 18th, 2016 - Part Two - Point Cabrillo Light Station

We arrived at the car park for the Light Station, parked the car and took our packed lunch with us.

It was quite a walk to the lighthouse but a lovely one.  There were wild flowers everywhere and we could see the light in the distance.  It is still an active light and the lens was rotating and shining.

Light Station and Ocean in the distance

The buildings had been wonderfully restored inside and outside.

The light keepers house(pictured below) is available as a vacation rental for between $850 and $983 for 2 nights!!!!  If you are interested here is a LINK for further information.

There was a small aquarium in one of the buildings where divers had given several examples of sea life.

Finally we reached the Light Station.  We went in, there was a small gift shop and more detailed history displayed inside.  A volunteer was running it and we had quite a chat with him, and met a couple from Little Rock, Arkansas and I told them how much I had enjoyed our visit there and especially the Pugh Mill.

After visiting the light station we decided to have our lunch.  We found a table overlooking the ocean, heaven!!!!

After lunch we walked along the overlook of the ocean.

I was about to discover the seals!!

I was the first to spot the harbor seals sunning themselves on the rocks below. I called to Bryan and he came to look.  They were so motionless we wondered if they were alive.  Just as we had said that they suddenly came to life and started flipping across the rocks, quite slowly and then stopped again.  It was as if they had heard us and needed to show us they were alive!!!
Here's a short VIDEO of the seals and ocean.  I'm sorry the quality is not great.

I went to tell the volunteer about the seals as I had asked him where they were, because we could hear them.  He told us that they were quite a distance in the opposite direction.  I thought he would like to know about these ones hiding quite close to his location.  I also mentioned them to others who were walking around and showed them where they were.  Good deed done for the day!!!

While I was doing that, this little fella kept posing for Bryan.

We decided to take the trail back to the car park through the fields.  I had asked the volunteer about it, and he confirmed it went back to the car park. We had been told that deer had been spotted that morning and he told us that he thought the doe had babies and if we saw her to stay clear as she was probably protecting her baby.  We started off on the trail but ended up going in a circle and found ourselves back at the light station.  Oops, obviously missed a turn somewhere!!!

Alrighty then, back at the Light Station. We decided to just go back the way we had come.

Back, near the car park, we saw this trolley going along on the outside road.

It was a lovely day out.  Beaches, Ocean and Lighthouses, our favorite things!!! So many pictures I had to do two separate posts!!!

On the way home, we saw this sign. Here's some information about Confusion Hill.

Another awesome day, we are certainly enjoying our travels north.
