Wild Bear Sighting in Klamath, Ca & Battery Point Lighthouse

May 22nd, 2016

Today was a travel day.  As our travel days haven't been very far we have not had to rush, in the mornings, with packing up and haven't set an alarm, just getting up when we wake up.

The USS Decatur posted more pictures.

We stopped at Trinidad rest area, for a short break and to stretch our legs.  It was a pretty location.  Although the drives are relatively short, today was just over 100 miles, Bryan has to stay alert as they are sometimes narrow, winding, uphill or downhill.  You just never know what will be around the next corner.  He takes it all in his stride.  I am so thankful that he doesn't mind driving Lily as without him we wouldn't be able to be on this adventure.

Growth on an old tree trunk.
There were low clouds and mist on part of the journey.

Eventually we arrived.

Golden Bear RV Resort in Klamath, California is a no frills campground but the view is outstanding.  The people were very friendly and we found a site directly overlooking the river.  The good thing here is that they have set the sites up so you can drive straight in and face the river and get the awesome view through the windscreen.
Hattie loves her view

There is a jet boat tour company next door and they have good reviews so we think we will take a trip with them one day up the river.

We had finished settling in and were relaxing when Bryan heard the campground manager talking to another camper outside and pointing across the river to the bank opposite.  There was a bear there.  Well, he quickly got his camera and managed to get this picture as it was disappearing into the bushes opposite us.  It was so exciting.  I got the binoculars and could see it quite clearly.

After that we lost him in the bushes but I kept looking for him along the bank.  I was mesmerized by the fact that he was out there somewhere and hoped we would see him again.

About an hour later I spotted him up by a beach further along.  There were some birds on the beach and he was laying in the grass there.  He was quite a distance away but Bryan got some pictures and through the binoculars we could see him playing in the grass, rolling and laying on his back.  It was so awesome.

How awesome was that and we have four nights here, hopefully we will see him again.

We decided to go to Crescent City today, see Battery Point Lighthouse and get some food shopping.  We weren't sure if we would be able to go inside it, as it was open according to the tides.  Unfortunately we got delayed, as when Bryan went to have a shower we had no water.  He told the managers and they discovered the tank was empty.  They told us that they would try and refill it but a tree had come down last night and they were worried a water line might have got broken.  Anyway about 30 minutes later we had water.  Bryan had his shower and we put some water in our tank as a precaution.  As were doing that it went out again.  The manager found out it was only the riverside lots that didn't have water and started to hook hoses up to the vacant sites in the middle and run them to the riverside lots until he could get it fixed.

While all this was going on I was "Bear spotting" but didn't see our bear.

Eventually we got out and headed to the lighthouse.  It was one of the most beautiful lighthouses we have seen.

It is on an island, connected to the mainland by a path that is only accessible at low tide.  In the picture below you can see the tide coming in and the path partially submerged.  We had missed being able to access the lighthouse by less than an hour!!!!   We may have to come back and get here a little earlier, we will see.

I took this VIDEO showing the tide coming in.

Sue walking on the beach watching the tide come in.  The rocks opposite are the island where the lighthouse is.  So near and yet so far!!!!

These homes were right by the beach and by this beautiful lighthouse.
This shows the ocean covering the path.
We decided to walk along the jetty(shown below) so we could take some better pictures of the lighthouse.

This crow posed for us.

Someone lost a boot!!!!
A last look back at the lighthouse
There were a lot of wildflowers growing by the beach.

We left the beach and lighthouse and went to Dennys to get some lunch before going on to Walmart for our food shopping.  Never go food shopping on an empty stomach!!!!!  We had a great morning and now for the more mundane aspects of life.

After lunch and getting our food shopping we headed home.  We stopped at quite a few viewpoints along the way for pictures and to listen to the ocean.

This was part of the Redwood National and State Parks.

Here's a VIDEO of this location.

We got home, unloaded and put away our groceries, looked for the bear again but nothing.

Bryan went outside at sunset and took these awesome pictures from our site.

Another awesome day, even if it did include grocery shopping!!!!
Goodnight to all and sweet dreams!!!!!
