Spring of 19 - #12 - Key West Lighthouse, Roosters

Thursday May 9th, 2019 - Part 1 of 2
We woke up bright and early, which was a good thing as the rooster would have woken us at 7.30 anyway!!!!

We had coffee, got ready and went out to a local Denny's for breakfast.  We found out that the roosters aren't only at the base.  Here's one outside of Dennys.  You can read about them HERE.

After breakfast we made our way to Key West Lighthouse.

They had very realistic statues.  This one was disposing some rubbish in the bin.

This sign reminded me of my lovely mum, as she was a Plum before she got married!!!
and here's the tree.

This tree was quite fascinating.

This "lady" was resting on the bench by the entrance to the lighthouse.  She wasn't very talkative.

Up we go!!!!!  This one should be easy, only 88 steps.

Hmmm, not easy at all.  They were steep steps and no landings!!!  We both struggled.

Eventually we reached the top.

The old steam plant now houses luxury condominiums.

Key West has very narrow streets and buildings packed in everywhere.  It is difficult to park, and a lot of people use bicycles to get around.  Golf carts are also used, but as one man said when we spoke to him "You still have to park them"

You can see the tower at Whitehead Point in the picture below. This is where the original lighthouse was, before it was destroyed by a hurricane.

Can you see the cruise ship, Disney Magic, in the picture below.  She was making a port stop here and that was probably why there were a lot more people here than we thought there would be, on a weekday, in the off season.  We saw her in Port Canaveral as well, which I believe is her home port.

Here's a closer view.

Looking up at the fresnal lens.

Loved this building,  picture taken from the top of the lighthouse.

We started our descent.

Getting down was a lot quicker than going up. I struggle with climbing the lighthouses, Bryan struggles with the descent.

A trolley train was giving hop on/hop off tours.

Typical house here in Key West.

Found these two outside the light keepers house getting ready to fly a kite!!!

This lizard was posing on a sign.

Another rooster, is he following us???

We got our lighthouse passport stamp, it's the first one in our new book, along with a stamp for Sand Key Light that we saw from the top here.

Our next stop will be the fort, see you there!!!!
