After being in for a few days we decided to go and look at the Parris Island Museum here on the base. For only a small museum it had a lot of information and the displays were well thought out. It took us quite a while to go through everything and read all the information.
This is a Marine Training Base and the recruits are obviously sent here to learn the history for some of their testing. The sign below was by any information that was part of the USMC History Curriculum.
We always seem to be taking pictures of guns. I think probably more than we would have done in the past as we know Ryan would be interested in them, although he probably never even reads the blog!!!
The displays were all integrated with backgrounds and information that enhanced the information given.
The exhibit below was a 10 minute documentary about the Battle of Port Royal and the Revolutionary War. It was fascinating as it used lights to highlight what they were telling. I wished I'd videoed it but didn't want to sit through it another 10 minutes, sorry!!
The picture below shows a diagram of troop movements during the Gulf War. This was particularly interesting to me as Bryan was deployed in Turkey when Iraq invaded Kuwait. I was concerned his deployment would be extended. Fortunately for us it wasn't but he did return to the "sandpit" several times, one of which was one week after we returned from our honeymoon in October 1991. Fortunately we didn't know about it until we returned from our trip but it made for a very busy week getting everything organized before he had to leave for 3 months. It was my initiation into the military.
We returned home and later Bryan noticed that the ceiling at the front of Lily was bulging!! We had a water leak!! We had to make a small hole in the ceiling liner and drain the water and Bryan got on the roof and did a temporary reseal of the seams on the roof. It was probably a good thing that he washed the motorhome so this showed up and we can try and fix it.
May 19th - 20th, 2014
We got ready to head to our next stop and on the 20th off we headed to Foster Creek RV Park at Goose Creek, South Carolina. It is a Naval Weapons Station and part of the Joint Forces, Charleston base. On our way we were followed by a mobile home being transported and the vehicle that was accompanying the load decided to pull in front of us so we were included in their oversize load escort for a while. I guess we'll have to put Lily on a diet!!! Ha!! Ha!!
We arrived safely and started to plan our trips for our week here.
Take care everyone, we'll be back soon.
