Tybee Island, Lighthouses & Forts

 Wednesday May 7th, 2014

Well, we got a call from the warranty company and they approved our repairs and so the mobile technician here will order a new air conditioner for us today and it should be here tomorrow.  It's a good job we have been going out every day as Lily has been getting very hot.  Thankfully the air is still working in the bedroom but the rest of the house has been like a sauna.  We will be glad to get it done and then hopefully we can still leave here on Friday for the next leg of our adventure.

After the repairs were all arranged we went to Tybee Island for the day.  Our trip took us back through Savannah and we drove down the road that we walked yesterday to see the Harbor Light.  It didn't take long before we were on the island. We went to Tybee Lighthouse first.

We climbed the 178 steps to the top of the lighthouse. I paced myself stopping at each landing after each 25 steps and managed the extra 49 steps than St. Simons, yay!!! It's a good job they haven't had seats at these landings because if I sat down I might not get up again, ha!! ha!!

The light at the top of the lighthouse.  I love this picture.

We listened to a video about the history and looked around the other buildings.

My grandmother had one of these, she taught me how to use it

I can't even go to the restroom without being caught!!!

We went across the street to the museum which was in the Battery Garland of Fort Screven

It was a maze of underground rooms each with a story to tell.
Look at the length of the rifle on the wall behind me

This was part of a mock up of an old hotel
Lots of guns that Ryan would have loved

This was part of a fairground re-creation. It was in the dark in a tunnel and the lights and music were started by a motion detector which nearly gave Bryan a heart attack.  It really wasn't very funny and gave him quite a shock
These pictures are of a girl scout exhibit that I thought Brenda & Aimee might like.

We went out on the roof and took this picture of the lighthouse across the street.

We wanted to see if we could get closer to the other lighthouse near Cockspur Island, which we had got a picture of from the top of this lighthouse and the gentleman in the gift shop had said the best place would be Fort Pulaski.  I had this as our next stop anyway and so we headed that way.
Fort Pulaski

We walked around the lower level first.   There were a lot of cannons and guns here.  Ryan would have loved this place as well.

Then we went up to the top.

And we got a better picture of Cockspur Island Light.  Sometimes at low tide you can walk out to it.

We stopped in the gift shop and the lady there tried to persuade us to become volunteers as they were very short staffed.  In return for me working in the gift shop and Bryan assisting with the gun demonstrations and maintenance they would give us a RV site.  It was tempting as this is a nice small location and would be a good start for our volunteering but we still have a lot to see and are not ready to stop for too long at the moment.  She told us that all the National Parks are always looking for volunteers.  Who knows, if we keep up with the lighthouse visits we may get fit enough to volunteer at the lighthouses.

We stopped in the main gift shop and got our passport stamped for Cockspur Light and then headed home.  On the way we bought some Georgia Peaches.

It was another great day and I finished it off by enjoying my Georgia Peach in my recliner later.  It was delicious. Yummy. :)
