Parris Island, SC & Mothers Day. Oh & we have Air Conditioning, yay!!!

May 8th, 2014

We stayed in and got caught up with laundry and getting things ready to leave tomorrow.  Eventually, the RV repair guy came at about 5pm to install the new air conditioner.  It didn't take very long and we were cool again. Yay!!

We took our time getting up and ready to leave as we were only going a short way today to Parris Island. This is a Marine Military Base that trains male recruits from East of the Mississippi & all female recruits.

On the way I took a picture of the camera in Lily showing Tilly being towed behind us.

On the bridge going over to Parris Island there were a lot of fishing boats, seems it was a popular spot.  I didn't get them all in the pictures.

The rain held off and we arrived about an hour after leaving Hardeeville.  The guards at the base inspected Lily by looking in all the basement compartments and inside and checked our insurance and title before giving us the go ahead to proceed to the park.  This is standard here and is the first base we have had it happen.  I think it is a good thing.

We had to get a key to unlock the utility box at the site and the lockbox combination I had wouldn't work.  Eventually after speaking with the office by phone, as it isn't on site, I had omitted a blank when I wrote the combination down and when they walked us through it we managed to get the key.  This is also the first place our utilities have been locked.

We got set up and I think the heat took a bit out of us as we were both exhausted, so we rested for the remainder of the day.  Later we had a very short thunderstorm and some rain but nothing much and the air cleared a little.

We went for a drive around the base today to see what was here.  We started at the beach which was very close to the campground.

Then we went back past Lily

on our way to the golf course.  We decided there were too many water traps on this course for us to be able to play it as novice as I am.

This is from the website regarding the golf course. "Historically, the site reaches back to the sixteenth century with the French occupation of Charlesfort. Later, the Spanish city of Santa Elena was established there and served as the capital of Spanish Florida until English raids in 1587 forced the Spaniards to evacuate to St. Augustine. Santa Elena is home to the oldest known European pottery kiln discovered in the United States. Three of the holes on the original course along with the practice range and the clubhouse are all located within the Santa Elena archaeology site."

I took these pictures of part of the site.

Then we drove to the main side of the base.  There were recruits doing drill exercises in the parade ground there.  I wanted to get a picture but thought it was best if I didn't as I wasn't sure of the policies. They looked very smart and I knew they had families and friends who were wondering about them just as we had about Ryan when he was in bootcamp.  It's a good job he didn't join the marines I would have wanted to camp over here and see if I could have spotted him, ha!! ha!!

This was one of the obstacle courses that the recruits train on.

We found the Base Exchange and Commissary and checked them out.  This plant was for sale. It is a Pitcher Plant that eats insects.

I was tempted to get one because of the mosquitos but haven't so far.  When I read about them it says that the larger ones can even eat small frogs.  As most of you know I love frogs and it would really upset me if my plant ate one.  Having said that I'm not sure this would be big enough but you never know.  I'm also not sure I want to see a plant eating anything, kind of creepy!!!

Next we drove around to see if we could find a lighthouse that is supposed to be on the base somewhere.  We found this and got excited as we thought it was the old lighthouse but we were wrong when we researched it more.

This was near another beach and some base housing.

I thought this was an interesting small building.

It was an interesting drive around.

We stayed in today as it's Mothers Day in America and everywhere will be crowded.  We will go out and celebrate another time.  In fact every day we go out on another adventure it feels as though we are celebrating so I don't need to have or do anything special, apart from hear from the kids and speak to our moms. England celebrate Mothers Day in March and so we had already said our Happy Mothers Day to my mum then. Bryan skyped with his mom and we wished her a Happy Mothers Day.
This picture of Bryan & his mom is from our visit in November 2013.

I got messages wishing me a Happy Mothers Day from Brenda, Ryan, Christina, and Ian & Kris skyped with me and so I got to interact with the two boys as well which was very nice.  They are growing so quickly.  Bryan spoiled me all day by cooking me breakfast and dinner and doing all the washing up.
We had unexpected visitors tonight, two frogs appeared on the outside of our screen door.  Bryan got a picture of one but it's not very clear. I don't think I'd better get a Pitcher plant now!!

What a great Mothers Day present. It was a great day and I felt thoroughly spoilt.
