Savannah, Georgia & Repairs

May 6th, 2014

We spent most of today going back and forth with the RV warranty company to get them to approve a new air conditioner for us.  They didn't want a mobile RV technician to do the work but wanted us to take the RV somewhere to get it fixed.  Bryan explained to them that this meant we had to find a RV repair shop, try & get an appointment, pack everything up to go there and find somewhere to live while they were fixing it, instead of letting the qualified technician who is living in the park we are at, and has good recommendations from several people, do it.  We waited most of the day for a return call but also decided we were going into Savannah to explore.

I picked out Oglethorpe Trolley Tours to do a tour of the city.
This company does things a little differently to the other trolley tours.  You stay on the bus for a 90 minute tour, no getting on and off where you want to. At the end of the tour they ask you where you would like to go back to and then take you there.  You then call them when you want to go somewhere else and they come and get you and take you to your next stop.  We didn't care for it quite as much, as it was difficult to keep track of all the places you would like to go back to and a little bit like hard work to keep calling them to come and get you.  Remember we are retired now, we do not want to work!!!!
As it turned out we only asked them to take us to one stop and then after we had walked around we got them to take us back to the car.  I will divide the pictures up between the trolley tour and our walking tour.

Here are the pics we got while on the trolley tour. Now I'm sorry but the driver went pretty quickly as well, so it was difficult to get good pictures and I can't remember what they all were.  Of course we could have gone back to any of them and looked at them more closely. The ones that I know I have put a link to a website that will tell you about them with the picture.

The tour driver did stop at The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and gave us 15 minutes to look around as it was due to close for services later in the day and he wanted us to be able to see it if we wanted to.  Unfortunately by stopping here it meant we missed some other parts of the city although we weren't told this.

This church, which had scaffolding around it, was seen in the movie Forrest Gump in the opening scenes where a feather floats past it and the bench where Forrest Gump sits was in a square nearby in Savannah.  Here is an article about it.

We even saw an old red British Telephone Box which was outside the Sixpence Pub

We ended our tour here at the City Market.

We chose to go back to Emmets Park by River Street as we knew there was supposed to be a harbor light there that was in our lighthouse book.  We asked the tour guide about it but he didn't know what we were talking about.  Anyway he dropped us off where we asked and lo and behold we found it immediately tucked away in the park.

We walked down this cobble path to the riverfront.

This is the Savannah Olympic Torch, which was for the sailing part of the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.  As Savannah was so far from Atlanta where the games were held it was agreed they could have there own opening and closing ceremonies.

Here is a statue of Florence Martus, The Waving Girl

We stopped and had lunch at Joes Crab Shack on the riverfront.  I wish we had tried a different restaurant as the prices here were much more than the one in Las Vegas and the food wasn't that brilliant.  Oh well, we'll know next time.  I still really prefer Red Lobster anyway.

Don't remember what this was but I liked it

We decided we had done enough for the day and called for the bus to take us back to the car.

We crossed this bridge on the way home.

Once we got home Bryan finally got in touch with the warranty company and had to speak with a supervisor who in turn decided she needed to speak to her manager who had left for the day but she said she would call us back tomorrow.  It was a very frustrating day as far as this went but there wasn't much more we could do at this point.

We had an interesting day touring Savannah although the trolley tour was a little disappointing our walk around was great.

Take care everyone.
